M101 The Pinwheel Galaxy

The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is a grand-design spiral galaxy located about 21 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. Its delicate spiral arms, filled with young blue stars and pink star-forming regions, give it the appearance of a cosmic pinwheel. With a diameter of roughly 170,000 light-years, it is one of the largest nearby spiral galaxies and provides an exquisite view of star formation in action.

My story: I’m still fascinated by how astronomers like Charles Messier were able to observe objects such as the Pinwheel Galaxy back in the 18th century. Of course, they only saw it as a small, faint nebula, but by the second half of the 19th century, Lord Rosse was able to describe its spiral structure and create several detailed sketches. Today, M101 is a favorite target for amateur astrophotographers – myself included – and it’s always a delight when I can capture its delicate spiral details.
