NGC 7000 North America Nebula

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) is a vast emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, approximately 1,600 light-years from Earth. Its shape strikingly resembles the continent of North America, with prominent “Gulf of Mexico” and “Florida” regions highlighted by dark dust lanes. The nebula is part of a larger H II region and glows with vibrant reds from ionized hydrogen gas, shaped by the radiation from nearby young, hot stars. This stellar nursery is rich in intricate structures and contrasting dark lanes, inviting observers to explore its depth and imagine the cosmic forces sculpting its form.

My story: This was the very first deep space object I ever captured—taken natively, without filters, from the balcony of my apartment in Prague. Just a few dozen subframes, yet it filled me with joy.

The image you see here is the result of several later attempts, this time with H-Alpha, OIII, and SII filters, combined into the iconic SHO palette made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope. If you look closely, you might just spot the familiar outline of North America hidden among the stars.
